Key facts
Pakistani applicants must hold an APS certificate from the German Academic Exchange Service before the visa appointment.
The blocked account for 2026 is around 11,900 euros — 992 euros per month for one year.
You need a confirmed admission (unconditional offer) or an APS-linked conditional place at a state- or state-recognised institution.
Visa fee is about 75 euros; processing takes 4 to 10 weeks after the appointment.
Once in Germany you may work 140 full days or 280 half days per year and stay for 18 months after graduation to search for work.
01The sequence before the appointment
The student visa is the last step of a longer chain: admission letter → APS certificate → blocked account → insurance → visa appointment. Each step depends on the previous, so the timeline is planned backwards from the semester start.
Winter semester (October) is the main intake; summer (April) is limited. Applying 12-18 months ahead is standard for a stress-free run.
02The APS certificate
The APS (Akademische Prüfstelle) verifies the authenticity of your school and university documents. Pakistani candidates submit scanned documents, sit a short interview or test, and receive the certificate — generally within 4-8 weeks.
The APS certificate is mandatory for the visa, unconditional offers and most university admissions from Pakistan. Plan it early; it expires relative to your documents rather than after a fixed date.
03The blocked account
You must open a blocked account with a German-licensed provider and fund about 992 euros per month — roughly 11,900 euros for the first year. The bank releases monthly amounts to your German account once you land.
Maintaining the account is part of every extension, so the first-year funding is just the beginning of proof. Scholarships, parental support letters and income from the 140-day work right complement the account but never replace it.
04Application steps and documents
The appointment at the German mission requires: valid passport, admission letter, APS certificate, blocked account confirmation, health insurance for the first months, degree certificates with translations, and CV.
The embassy checks completeness instantly; a missing page means a rescheduled appointment and lost weeks. Use the document matrix practice from our attestation guide to keep it zero-defect.
05Costs beyond the blocked account
Tuition is free at public universities (admin fees 150-350 euros per semester). Real costs are living: 850-1,300 euros monthly depending on the city, plus health insurance (~130 euros monthly full cover) and the visa and flight.
Public university students earn 12.50-14 euros per hour on side jobs, which realistically funds a third to half of living costs. Semester tickets for transport and student discounts close the rest.
06Common refusal reasons
The standard refusals: admission that does not lead to a recognised programme of study, incomplete funds, missing APS, or courses that look commercialised (private diploma mills). The remedy is advance planning, not appeals.
Our best advice: apply only to state or university programmes you can explain in one sentence, and never book flights or accommodation before the visa decision.
