01The five routes at a glance
Germany runs five main legal routes for skilled workers from Pakistan. Each answers the same question differently: what do you already have — a degree, a contract, a recognised profession, or a strong profile?
The Opportunity Card suits professionals searching from abroad, the skilled worker visa suits anyone with a contract, the Blue Card fast-tracks degree holders, the nursing route handles healthcare, and Ausbildung is the training-entry route.

Skilled worker visa (§18a) — any recognised or experience-based role
EU Blue Card (§18g) — degree + salary threshold, fastest PR
The §18a visa is the workhorse route: any job a German employer offers you, from technical roles to trades, provided your qualification is recognised or you bring sufficient professional experience.
Requirements: signed contract, recognised degree or equivalent experience, adequate German or English for the role, and planned accommodation. Processing is fast because the employer's offer ties everything together.
03The EU Blue Card (§18g)
The Blue Card is for degree holders with a salary above the German threshold (around 48,300 euros in 2026, lower for shortage professions). It grants faster family reunion and permanent residence after 21 months with B1 German (27 with A1).

04Who should take which route
Short rule: degree plus contract above the threshold — Blue Card. Degree plus any contract — §18a. Recognised profession like nursing — the employer-partnership route. No contract yet — Opportunity Card. Below degree level, motivated and under 30 — Ausbildung.
Experience-based candidates without a four-year degree can still qualify for §18a in shortage occupations after consultation with the embassy, so a free profile review is always the right first step.
05The documents every file needs
Passport with validity beyond the visa, degree and transcripts (attested + translated), CV, work letters proving experience, language certificates, and the signed contract or points evidence. Everything is checked twice: the embassy reads the file, then the German authorities re-read it at your arrival.

06Timelines, costs and the honest warning
Plan 4-10 weeks for the visa after biometrics, plus 1-3 months of document and contract preparation. Government fees are small (75-150 euros); the real cost is the preparation time and your language level.
The most common refusal reasons in 2026: unrecognised private-university degrees, experience letters without duties and duration, and language evidence that does not match the job. All three are fixable before you apply — none of them after the refusal.
